Happy Holidays to the Best US Soccer Fans!
With a little known USMNT holiday story sprinkled in
Hey there It’s Called Soccer readers!
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you all for being dedicated readers of the substack newsletter. I started writing this year as a way to continue discussing US Soccer when I wasn’t making YouTube videos… I need to get a life. Anyways! Your enthusiasm for the team is contagious and I absolutely love being able to share the love of soccer with all of you.
I know that you have a lot of options when it comes to following the USMNT, and I am so grateful that you choose to spend your valuable time with us. Your feedback and engagement have been invaluable to me as I strive to provide the best content possible.
So from the bottom of my heart, thank you for supporting us and for being such an amazing community of soccer fans. I hope that the newsletter and YouTube channel brings a little bit of joy and excitement into your day, whether you're celebrating a big win or rallying around the team after a tough loss. It’s been a heck of a year for us fans, especially with the ups and downs of the World Cup (I’m going to choose mostly ups).
We promise to always bring you the latest updates and insights on the USMNT, as well as a healthy dose of humor (because let's face it, we all need a little laugh these days).
In light of the holidays - have you heard the story about the time the USMNT celebrated the Fourth of July in South Korea?
In 2002, the US Men's National Team set their sights on South Korea for the World Cup. As they prepared for the tournament, the team arrived in South Korea weeks in advance to acclimate to the time zone and train at high altitude. And what better way to celebrate America's independence than with a good old-fashioned barbecue on the Fourth of July?
But, as it turns out, the team forgot one crucial component for their BBQ celebration - condiments. With no BBQ sauce in sight, the team had to get creative and ended up using honey and mustard as a makeshift sauce. Despite the unconventional condiments, the barbecue was a hit and the team enjoyed a memorable Fourth of July celebration.
And their hard work paid off - the USMNT went on to have a successful run in the World Cup, making it all the way to the quarterfinals in one of their best performances ever. Maybe it was the honey and mustard. We should try that again in 2026!
Anyways, I just wanted to thank you again for being such amazing friends. I hope you have a happy and healthy holiday season with friends and family.
All the best,
Jake
